Method Takes Aim at Global Warming by Offsetting Corporate Carbon Footprint
San Francisco, CA-- As concern continues to grow about the effects of global warming, Method Products, Inc is taking action. The company is offsetting its carbon footprint from business operations by purchasing Renewable Energy Credits and Forest Sequestration Offsets from Green Mountain Energy Company’s eMission Solutions division. Every year, this action helps avoid about 532 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas that causes global warming, which is enough to offset Method’s entire estimated carbon footprint.
Method is taking a comprehensive approach to addressing its carbon footprint. In addition to offsetting electricity and natural gas usage for its offices, Method is offsetting all of the electricity used to manufacture products at its 13 facilities around the country. The company is also offsetting all of its employee commuting and travel.
“Offsetting Method’s carbon footprint is a core strategy in our commitment to sustainability as a business. Green Mountain Energy Company helped make offsetting possible, ” said Adam Lowry, Method co-founder. “It is a milestone to have nailed this and we look forward to building on the program.”
“Method has taken carbon management to a new level by focusing on all aspects of its business – business operations, product manufacture and employee commuting and travel,” said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer for Green Mountain Energy Company. “They have raised the bar compared to other companies who are offsetting their carbon footprint.”
Using Wind Energy to Offset Emissions Associated with Electricity Usage
By purchasing wind energy credits Method is helping to avoid over 950,000 pounds of CO2 emissions in just one year – as much as a car would produce in over 1 million miles of driving. This has the equivalent environmental benefit of recycling over 2.2 million aluminum cans or recycling over 380,000 pounds of newspaper. The wind energy credits purchased by Method were sourced from projects located in the Northwestern region of the U.S.
Taking Advantage of Forest Sequestration
By supporting the planting of 1,000 trees, Method is offsetting the estimated 100 metric tons of CO2 emissions associated with their employee commuting and air travel footprint. That is like not driving over 245,000 miles. By supporting tree planting projects, Method contributes to the development of carbon “sinks”, which facilitate the long term storage of carbon.
The trees will be planted in Chicago, IL along the O’Hare Expressway and Stevenson Expressway. The planted forest will also benefit communities adjacent to the urban traffic along the expressway year round. These trees will help absorb noise and air pollution as well as provide the residents of these communities with a more attractive atmosphere in which to live.

Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Takes Aim at Global Warming by Making Their Business Operations Carbon Neutral
Southern Alliance for Clean Energy is partnering with Green Mountain Energy Company's eMission Solutions division to offset 100% of their estimated carbon dioxide emissions and are challenging other Southeast businesses to do the same in effort to reduce global warming pollution.
Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) June 25, 2006 -- Southern Alliance for Clean Energy announced today that they are working with Green Mountain Energy Company's eMission Solutions division to make their business operations carbon neutral in 2006. They also extend the challenge to other businesses in the Southeast to reduce global warming pollution.
"We hope that our purchase will serve as an example to Southern businesses that it is possible TODAY to make your standard business operations carbon neutral and address a leading cause of global warming," stated Stephen Smith, executive director of Southern Alliance for Clean Energy. "It's easy. If we, a small non-profit can do it, so can others."
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions are a leading cause of the recent global warming crisis. Southern Alliance for Clean Energy is accomplishing this through purchasing wind power and re-sequestration. This commitment helps avoid over 330,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, an impact which is roughly the equivalent impact of not driving over 366,000 miles.
Additionally, the organization purchases clean energy from regional solar and methane sources in green power programs in markets where they are available, like the Tennessee Valley Authority's Green Power Switch(R).
"Southern Alliance for Clean Energy has set the bar for the Southeast by not only educating the community about the effects of global warming and the impact of carbon emissions, but now through this purchase, going a step further and offsetting all of their carbon dioxide emissions from business operations," said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer for Green Mountain Energy Company and head of the eMission Solutions division.
To become a “Carbon Neutral” company Southern Alliance for Clean Energy is offsetting its estimated CO2 emissions from its office electricity usage, refrigerant use, natural gas usage, and employee commuting and travel. This move is in response to the increasing effects of global warming.
"The Southeast is particularly vulnerable to the wrath of global warming," stated Smith. "Increased global temperatures could destroy many of our coastal communities through sea level rise and increases in hurricane strength and frequency. Global warming is the toughest environmental problem we currently face. Southern Alliance for Clean Energy is doing our part to reduce our global warming impact, are you doing yours?"

Kiehl's Since 1851 To Purchase Renewable Energy Credits from Green Mountain Energy For 10 of Its Stores
Purchase Means Kiehl's is Now Offsetting 100% of Its Electricity Usage For All of Its Stores
Austin, TX, April 5, 2006 – Green Mountain Energy Company, one of the nation's leading retail providers of cleaner electricity products, announced today that its eMission Solutions division will be supplying Kiehl’s Since 1851, the New York-based skin and hair care company, with Renewable Energy Credits to offset the electricity usage for 10 of its stores across the US.
This deal combined with green power contracts already in place at other Kiehl’s freestanding stores means that all of Kiehl’s retail stores are using renewable energy to offset all of the pollution created by their electricity usage. Renewable energy comes from less-polluting sources and is replenished naturally - examples include wind, solar and low-impact hydro facilities.
Ten Kiehl’s stores are purchasing more than 600 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy credits from the eMission Solutions division of Green Mountain Energy Company. Kiehl’s is already signed up for green power programs in markets where they are available and this purchase of renewable energy credits means that they are offsetting the electricity usage at all of their stores across the US. By supporting renewable energy sources for their ten national stores, Kiehl’s will avoid more than 613,000 pounds of carbon dioxide pollution in one year. To have the same environmental impact, more than 50 cars would have to be taken off the road or more than 41,000 trees would have to be planted.
“There’s now positive proof of climate change,” said Philip Clough, president of Kiehl’s Since 1851. “We all need to act now as this issue has become critical. The transition to green power is not only highly effective in reducing emissions, it’s a step strongly supported by our staff and our patrons.”
Kiehl’s commitment to the environment begins with the underlying mission of the company to support the communities it serves. Supporting renewable energy is one of many environmental initiatives that the company embraces.
“We are proud to work with Kiehl’s to help them achieve their goal of offsetting electricity usage for all of their stores,” said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer for Green Mountain Energy Company and head of the eMission Solutions division. “Companies are increasingly looking at their carbon footprint and using renewable energy as a way to reduce the impact that their business has on the environment. Kiehl’s is a prime example of a company with a strong environmental record that is committed to taking it to the next level.”
